SAT (Scholastic
Assessment Test)
WHO: This test is optional and is typically used for college admissions. Most of our Tuscola students do not take the SAT since the State of Illinois requires all juniors to take the SAT in the spring of their junior year. Students from any grade can take it, but typically it is taken the junior year so students can use the test scores during the fall of their senior year when applying to colleges. LOCATION: Students select a test center that works best for them. Typically students take it in Champaign since it is not offered in Tuscola. Students select the test location they want when they register online. DATE: The SAT is offered numerous times throughout the year. Typically students score the best if they take the SAT in the spring of their junior year. Students select the test date they want when they register online. The national test dates can be found here. TIME: It typically starts at 8:00 am at most test centers. Students will be able to find the exact time of the test when they register online. WHAT: The SAT is used for college admission purposes and often for scholarships. Students must register online to take the SAT over a month in advance if they are taking an SAT on one of the national test dates. The SAT consists of questions in reading, writing and language, and math. The actual test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Additional time is needed for the reading of instructions and distributing test materials. PREPARING FOR THE SAT: The best preparation is to take advantage of learning as much as you can in your English and math classes. The knowledge taught over the years is the best practice you will get for the SAT. Students can also get great study material on KHAN Academy. WHAT TO BRING TO THE SAT: Please check on College Board's SAT website to see what they require you to bring to the exam. Students should bring their ID for any SAT administered outside of our school. Students typically are recommended to bring pencils, pens, and a calculator. |
